Apparently "Bone China" was first developed in Britain (Not China)

Bone china uses about 40 to 50% bone ash in its content to strenghten , whiten and lower the firing temp 100 to 200 degrees. It appears that some modern bone china is made with calcium carbonate rather than bones as a source..

References list OX bone as a major source

My aunt is a senior professor in Beijing University and she adores her south african student as he is deligent and smart. Are there any racism in China? yes, same as everywhere else in the world. As long as you are kind and polite I do not see why you can't teach in China.

There has been a lot of Caucasians travelling to China in the past few years, so they are not so "rare" anymore. But African Americans still might be :)

If you go to larger cities, people will not even notice that you're there, since there's quite a bit of diversity. However, if you go to a smaller town, people will look at you because they haven't seen many African Americans before. But even if they stare or talk, they don't mean harm.

The reason is that in China, people really don't care if you're AFRICAN American. The fact that they've never seen you before makes you interesting, not because they look down on you, or are prejudiced against you.

Chinese people not liking Japanese people has NOTHING to do with race. And the general dislike for the Japanese are not limited to any location or age. It's the history that caused the feud... not race. Chinese and Japanese are the same "race" anyways.

Please, if you really want to teach in China, go for it! Chinese students absolutely LOVE international English teachers. I would know, because I grew up in China :) From the bottom of my heart, thank you for wanting to teach in China, and like most Chinese, I welcome you sincerely.

Yes unfortunally there is some prejudice towards African-American. Somehow the English teaching schools , mostly the ones your should avoid, tend to like there teachers white as it gives the effect that there English teachers as native English speakers....

As for social life there is some passive racism towards blacks, in Beijing certain bars would ban blacks or overcharge them entry to get into ngihtclubs etc.

First of all, your question asking has anyone that wasn't Caucasian taught English in China is a bit racist in itself. True, as a Caucasian, I can't know what it is like to teach in China as an African American, but we are BOTH foreigners here. I have taught here six years and I have taught with African American teachers at most of my schools. Some of the schools had very few foreign teachers (at one school I was the ONLY ONE they had ever had - I did a good job and now it is THE foreign language school in the area with a dorm built especially for foreign teachers!), but any school where I taught where there were at least ten teachers there were African Americans on the faculty. China is probably les prejudiced than the USA ( I am an Amercan who taught in the USA for 24 years and six years in China and two in Korea -the Koreans tend not to like ANY foreigners!)

The foreign teachers who were African American (and those who were African and black) seemed to have good experiences. The ones I knew best all did.

Good luck! China is a wonderful place to teach! Please be careful that you don't misinterpret some of the things all foreigners go thru in China (and there is a lot of culture shock) as being racially motivated. In all likelihood it is just the cultural differences.

My husband is Chinese-American (born in the US), and experiences racism in China. It was recommended that he send tapes of his speech along with his application so that the university would know he is a native English speaker. While he ended up applying in person for the job he now has, he definitely gets comments like, "Are you a real American?" (We live in a smaller city in the northwest.)

We do know of one African-American teacher in our city who is married to a Caucasian man. They get a lot of stares! Her disadvantage is not her race, but her pronunciation. She has an extremely strong southern accent! (I grew up in Mississippi so I definitely know an accent when I hear one.) When one is teaching oral English, then it's important to have clear speech.

If you go to larger cities, I think you will have a more positive experience. I taught at a school in Beijing that had two African-American English teachers and they never indicated a negative experience. If you start somewhere like Beijing or Shanghai, then you can branch out from there.

Good luck!
