What is the going rate for private English lessons in China?

I'm considering teaching English in China. From what I understand, the typical salary is far less than it is in South Korea. This is a big consideration for me, because I have substantial student loans to pay back.
But what is the average rate for teaching private lessons? Is it similar to South Korea?
And... is it legal to teach private lessons in China on a normal teacher's visa? (It isn't in Korea, but it's still extremely common.)
Thanks!

The going rate in Zhongshan is 75 to 100 an hour. It is not illegal. But, if you work for a school, all the contracts say that you will not do this!
Everyone here still does it from time to time. Especially teachers trying to pay their student loans. I am too old to still have student loans, so I teach private lessons solely on the basis if I enjoy the class and student. It could be a really smart student or a really pretty one, both are enjoyable.
100-150yuan/hour depends on the city.

depends on in what city – developed cities like Beijing and Shanghai, even places like Xia-men, private lessons run 150-200 rmb an hour. More secluded destinations like smaller towns and cities offer much less – unless a company brought you there specifically to teach their employees english. At the present moment, English teaching is at a premium because private english teachers such as yourself are having a very difficult time obtaining the required f or l visa. You can’t really get f visas right now, you can get an L, on which you could teach, ILLEGALLY, other than that, unless you did it through a school, no visa.
More money can be charged if you teach business english privately, the rate for teaching businessmen business english is around 300rmb an hour.
Lastly, should you decide to teach english in China remember that even though you make far less than in South Korea, your money goes a lot further.
good luck
Even in a tiny town (Tai’an represent!) its 100 RMB/an hour minimum. As with all things, budget more for the big cities…
